Danish Retail Favourite NORMAL Opens in Caldas da Rainha

Danish retail chain NORMAL is continuing its Portuguese expansion with a new store in Caldas da Rainha. It is welcome news for international residents of the Silver Coast—and particularly for Scandinavians who occasionally miss familiar products from home.

NORMAL is not simply a Nordic speciality shop, however. Its mixture of recognised brands, low prices, constantly changing products and maze-like stores has made the company popular across Europe.

A new store for the Silver Coast

The new NORMAL store opened on 26 August 2026 at La Vie Caldas da Rainha shopping centre. It is open every day from 10am until 11pm.

The opening, reported by The Portugal News, represents another step in the company’s rapid expansion across Portugal.

Caldas da Rainha is a particularly interesting location for the retailer. The city is the main commercial centre for a large part of the Silver Coast, serving people from communities including Óbidos, Foz do Arelho, São Martinho do Porto, Nazaré, Bombarral and Peniche.

The region also has a sizeable international population. British, French, German, Dutch, Scandinavian and Brazilian residents regularly travel to Caldas da Rainha for shopping and services.

The store can be found inside La Vie Caldas da Rainha at Rua Belchior de Matos 11, close to the city centre.

From Silkeborg to the rest of Europe

NORMAL opened its first shop in Silkeborg, Denmark, in April 2013. Since then, it has developed into a major European retail chain with stores across markets including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Italy, Ireland and Portugal.

The company arrived in Portugal in 2022, opening its first Portuguese store at Alegro Sintra, near Lisbon. It has since expanded to cities throughout the country, from Braga and Porto in the north to Portimão, Loulé and Tavira in the Algarve.

Its growing Portuguese presence suggests that the concept appeals to considerably more than Scandinavian shoppers.

What does NORMAL sell?

The company’s name is based on the idea of selling “normal products at abnormal prices”.

Its stores mainly offer everyday consumer goods such as:

  • Skincare and haircare
  • Shampoo and personal hygiene products
  • Makeup and cosmetics
  • Dental care
  • Household cleaning products
  • Confectionery and snacks
  • International drinks
  • Small household items
  • Seasonal and novelty products

Many are well-known international brands already familiar to Portuguese consumers. Others are products or variations more commonly sold in Northern and Central Europe.

Scandinavian customers may therefore come across familiar sweets, toiletries, cleaning products or versions of international brands that are not usually stocked by Portuguese supermarkets.

British, French, German and Dutch residents may also recognise products from their home markets.

NORMAL is not, however, a traditional Scandinavian grocery store. Customers should not expect a permanent selection of Danish, Norwegian or Swedish specialities. Its stock changes regularly, and part of the attraction is that visitors never know exactly what they might find.

Shopping designed as a treasure hunt

NORMAL stores are noticeably different from conventional supermarkets. Customers follow a winding route between shelves and displays in a layout resembling a small maze.

New products, temporary lines and items made popular through social media appear throughout the route. The format encourages customers to explore the whole shop rather than heading directly to one particular shelf.

You may enter intending to buy shampoo and toothpaste, but leave with liquorice, face masks, cleaning products and a water bottle you had not planned to purchase.

The company describes the experience as a “treasure hunt”. Alongside its permanent selection of recognised brands, products on shelves and display stands are changed regularly. A visit can therefore feel different even if you were in the same shop the previous week.

Are the prices always lower?

NORMAL promotes fixed, consistently low prices rather than relying heavily on temporary discounts.

That does not necessarily mean every item will always be cheaper than at Continente, Pingo Doce, Auchan, Wells, Primor or a local independent shop. Prices can vary according to the product, package size and promotions offered by competing retailers.

Some imported items may represent excellent value, while others can be found at a similar or lower price elsewhere. It is still worth comparing the price per litre, kilogram or individual unit, especially for products bought regularly.

NORMAL’s main advantage is the combination of competitive prices, familiar brands and a product range that differs from the average Portuguese supermarket.

Familiar to Scandinavians, international in practice

For Danes, Norwegians and Swedes living in Portugal, entering a NORMAL store may bring an unexpected sense of familiarity. The design, turquoise branding and informal atmosphere are already well known across Scandinavia.

Finding a familiar product can also save someone from carrying it back in a suitcase or ordering it online.

Yet NORMAL should not be viewed exclusively as a Nordic shop. Its Portuguese customers include local residents and expatriates from across Europe and beyond. Many of its brands are global, and the company’s success in markets such as France and Spain demonstrates its broader appeal.

What feels pleasantly familiar to a Scandinavian may be an entirely new shopping experience for a Portuguese customer.

More competition in Portuguese retail

Portugal has attracted a growing number of international retailers in recent years. Spanish chains such as Mercadona and Primor, Ireland’s Primark and several other brands are competing for Portuguese consumers.

NORMAL occupies a position somewhere between a beauty retailer, a discount shop and an international snack store.

Its continued expansion could increase competition in cosmetics, toiletries and household cleaning products. For shoppers, that may bring a wider choice and greater pressure on prices.

The development can be more challenging for smaller independent retailers. A large international chain can purchase substantial quantities and distribute stock across several European markets, creating buying advantages that are difficult for a small shop to match.

A useful addition to Caldas da Rainha

The Caldas da Rainha opening makes NORMAL far more accessible to people living along the central Silver Coast. Many residents previously had to travel to Leiria, Santarém, Torres Novas or the Lisbon area to visit one of its stores.

Local shoppers and the region’s international community can now explore the concept without making a long journey.

There is no guarantee that a favourite product from Denmark, Norway, Britain, France or Germany will be waiting on the shelf. Nevertheless, the possibility of finding something familiar—or discovering something entirely new—is an important part of the appeal.

NORMAL has managed to turn ordinary toiletries and household products into a form of treasure hunt. Judging by the chain’s expansion in Portugal, local consumers are developing a taste for this rather unusual Danish interpretation of what is normal.
