Lisbon Airport Introduces Fixed Taxi Fares – But What About Transfers to Portugal’s Silver Coast?
From 15 October 2026, taxis departing from Lisbon Airport will operate under a new fixed-fare system, with journeys into the city costing €16 or €19 during weekday daytime hours. The initiative aims to improve transparency and prevent overcharging. But for the growing international community living along Portugal’s Silver Coast, another question is just as important: What should a taxi from Lisbon Airport to Caldas da Rainha, São Martinho do Porto, Nazaré or Peniche actually cost?
For thousands of foreign residents living on Portugal’s Silver Coast, Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport is an essential connection to the rest of Europe.
Whether travelling to the UK, Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands, Scandinavia or elsewhere, many residents regularly make the journey between their homes along the Atlantic coast and Portugal’s busiest airport.
For those living around Caldas da Rainha, São Martinho do Porto or Óbidos, that journey is approximately 90–110 kilometres, depending on the exact destination.
Driving yourself is one option. Public transport is another.
But for many residents, especially those travelling with luggage, arriving late at night or simply preferring not to leave a car at the airport, a private taxi or airport transfer is the most convenient solution.
In local Facebook groups, one question appears repeatedly:
“Can anyone recommend a reliable taxi or airport transfer service between the Silver Coast and Lisbon Airport?”
The new fixed-fare initiative therefore raises some interesting questions, not only for visitors to Lisbon but also for the international community living further north.
What changes at Lisbon Airport on 15 October?
Lisbon City Council, the airport operator ANA, Turismo de Lisboa and Portugal’s principal taxi associations have agreed on a new system of fixed prices for journeys departing from the official taxi rank at Lisbon Airport.
The agreement was signed on 11 September 2026 and is scheduled to take effect on Thursday, 15 October.
Its primary objectives are to provide greater price transparency, improve service standards and protect passengers from excessive charges.
The initiative follows years of complaints concerning taxi services at the airport, including allegations of overcharging and drivers refusing certain journeys.
The agreement establishes two principal fare zones within Lisbon.
New taxi fares from Lisbon Airport
| Journey | Weekdays, 7am–10pm | Nights, weekends and public holidays |
|---|---|---|
| Zone 1 – Areas closer to the airport | €16 | €20 |
| Zone 2 – Central and western Lisbon | €19 | €23 |
These prices apply to a standard taxi carrying up to four passengers.
The fare is for the entire vehicle, not per person, and includes luggage.
Zone 1 includes neighbourhoods such as Alvalade, Areeiro, Avenidas Novas, Parque das Nações and Olivais.
Zone 2 covers much of central Lisbon, including Baixa, Chiado, Bairro Alto, Belém and other popular destinations.
For taxis carrying more than four passengers, when using a suitably licensed larger vehicle, the daytime fares are €20 and €23 respectively. At night, on weekends and public holidays, they rise to €24 and €28.
The scheme is initially based on an agreement between the participating organisations, pending more specific municipal regulations.
What about airport transfers to the Silver Coast?
This is where the story becomes particularly relevant to MaisOeste.tv readers.
The new €16 and €19 fares do not apply to journeys from Lisbon Airport to the Silver Coast.
However, Lisbon’s official tourism organisation already operates a prepaid taxi voucher system covering destinations throughout Portugal.
According to the publicly available price list on the official Visit Lisboa website, the following fixed fares are advertised for journeys originating at Lisbon Airport.
Published taxi voucher prices to the Silver Coast
| Destination | Daytime | Night, weekend or public holiday |
|---|---|---|
| Óbidos | €119.00 | €142.85 |
| Caldas da Rainha | €119.00 | €142.85 |
| Peniche | €119.00 | €142.85 |
| Nazaré | €167.90 | €201.45 |
| Torres Vedras / Santa Cruz | €88.65 | €106.40 |
| Leiria | €193.50 | €232.20 |

These prices are particularly interesting because they provide an official published reference against which travellers can compare quotations from private transfer operators.
However, there are some important qualifications.
The published voucher page uses an older fare structure for certain Lisbon journeys, including different daytime and nighttime periods from those in the new October agreement.
This suggests that parts of the published price list may not yet have been updated to reflect the new arrangements.
Consequently, the Silver Coast prices above should be treated as published reference fares as of 12 October 2026, rather than guaranteed prices for future bookings.
Travellers should confirm the current price directly with the Ask Me Lisboa airport tourism desk before purchasing a voucher.
São Martinho do Porto is not separately listed in the published destination table. Residents travelling there should ask for the applicable fare rather than assuming that the price for Caldas da Rainha or Nazaré automatically applies.
A 100-kilometre journey is a different business from a city taxi ride
It is worth remembering that the economics of an airport transfer to the Silver Coast are very different from a short journey within Lisbon.
A driver travelling from Caldas da Rainha or São Martinho do Porto to Lisbon Airport may need to cover approximately 200 kilometres for a return journey.
If the driver is collecting a passenger arriving from abroad, the trip may also involve waiting time, flight monitoring, parking and assistance with luggage.
Motorway tolls, fuel, insurance, vehicle maintenance and the driver’s working time all contribute to the cost.
A taxi driver based on the Silver Coast cannot necessarily charge the same as a driver operating continuously within Lisbon.
For example, a €120 airport transfer covering 200 kilometres of vehicle travel represents €0.60 per kilometre before operating costs, taxes and any unpaid waiting time are considered.
This does not mean that every quote of €120 is reasonable, or that a higher quote is automatically excessive.
It means travellers should compare the complete service being offered rather than simply looking at the headline price.
A locally based driver who collects you from your front door, helps with luggage and takes you directly to the correct airport terminal may provide a very different service from a taxi hailed at the airport.
How much should a private airport transfer cost?
There is no single fixed price for private airport transfers between Lisbon and the Silver Coast.
Prices vary according to the destination, vehicle, number of passengers, time of day and services included.
To provide some perspective, we examined publicly advertised prices from commercial transfer operators in October 2026.
One provider advertised a transfer from Lisbon Airport to Caldas da Rainha for approximately €91, while another quoted more than €180 for a comparable destination.
For Nazaré, advertised private transfer prices ranged from approximately €134 to more than €200, depending on the operator and vehicle category.
These are examples of advertised quotations, not representative market averages or guaranteed prices.
Nevertheless, they illustrate why comparing offers can be worthwhile.
A difference of €50 or more for the same journey is significant, particularly for residents who travel several times a year.

Why booking a local Silver Coast driver can make sense
Many expatriates prefer to use a locally based taxi driver or airport transfer company.
There are several practical advantages.
A driver based in Caldas da Rainha, Nazaré, Peniche or São Martinho do Porto is familiar with the region and its smaller towns and villages.
This can be particularly useful when your destination is a rural property outside the main population centres.
Local operators may also offer a more personal service, including assistance with luggage, collection from home and flexible arrangements for early departures.
For regular travellers, establishing a relationship with a reliable driver can be valuable.
It can also make arrangements easier for visiting friends and family.
Instead of explaining complicated directions to visitors arriving in Portugal for the first time, residents can arrange for someone they know to collect them at the airport.
For older residents or passengers with mobility difficulties, this type of door-to-door service may be particularly attractive.
However, choosing a local operator does not automatically guarantee a lower price.
A driver based on the Silver Coast may need to make an empty journey in one direction, while an operator based in Lisbon could have different scheduling opportunities.
Both may offer competitive prices depending on their circumstances.
The important thing is to choose a properly licensed operator offering a clearly agreed total price.
What should you ask before booking?
When requesting an airport transfer, the cheapest initial quotation is not necessarily the best offer.
It is worth confirming several details:
- Total price: Does the quoted fare include VAT, motorway tolls, airport parking and luggage?
- Flight delays: Does the driver monitor flight arrivals, and how much waiting time is included?
- Collection arrangements: Will the driver meet you inside the terminal, or at a designated pickup location?
- Vehicle size: Is there sufficient room for passengers and all their luggage?
- Payment: Can you pay by card, MB Way or bank transfer?
- Cancellation: What happens if your flight is cancelled or significantly delayed?
- Return journeys: Is there a reduced price if you book both airport transfers together?
For regular travellers, it may also be worth asking whether the company offers preferential rates for repeat customers.
Getting these details in writing, even through WhatsApp or email, can prevent misunderstandings.
Can you use the official taxi voucher for the Silver Coast?
Yes. Lisbon’s official tourism organisation advertises prepaid taxi vouchers for destinations beyond the city, including several towns on the Silver Coast.
The voucher service is available through the Ask Me Lisboa tourism desk in the arrivals hall.
According to Turismo de Portugal, the desk offers the service daily between 7am and 10pm.
The voucher establishes the price before the journey begins and includes luggage.
The published Visit Lisboa price list provides fares for destinations such as Caldas da Rainha, Óbidos, Peniche and Nazaré.
However, the price list contains some information that differs from the new October agreement. Travellers should therefore confirm the applicable fare when purchasing a voucher.
For residents who have not pre-booked a local driver, this provides another option when arriving at Lisbon Airport.
It may be particularly useful for visitors travelling to the Silver Coast for the first time.

Is the new fixed-fare system necessarily cheaper?
Not always.
Portuguese consumer organisation DECO PROteste has questioned aspects of the new arrangement.
The organisation argues that while fixed fares can make pricing more transparent, some passengers may end up paying more than they would under the traditional taximeter system.
For example, a short trip that previously cost €10 could become more expensive under a €16 fixed fare.
For longer journeys within Lisbon, particularly during heavy traffic, the opposite may be true.
DECO has also raised concerns about the legal basis for the arrangement and the extent to which passengers retain a choice between different pricing systems.
The agreement is currently a self-regulatory initiative rather than a final municipal regulation.
For consumers, the important distinction is that a fixed fare provides price certainty, but does not necessarily guarantee the lowest price.

What about Uber and Bolt?
Uber and Bolt are widely used in Portugal, including for airport journeys.
However, neither service is covered by the new Lisbon Airport taxi agreement.
Their prices depend on factors such as demand, driver availability, destination and time of day.
For trips to the Silver Coast, availability may also vary considerably.
Passengers booking through these platforms should check whether a driver is available for their intended destination and confirm the quoted fare before booking.
Lisbon Airport has a dedicated pickup area for app-based transport services.
According to the airport operator, Uber and Bolt passengers are collected from P2, Level 2, at the arrivals level.
This is separate from the official taxi rank.

Public transport remains an alternative
Not everyone travelling between Lisbon Airport and the Silver Coast needs a private transfer.
For people travelling alone, particularly those with limited luggage, public transport can be substantially cheaper.
Several bus companies operate services between Lisbon and towns including Caldas da Rainha, Peniche and Nazaré.
Depending on the service and destination, passengers may need to travel from the airport to a bus terminal elsewhere in Lisbon.
For example, Campo Grande and Sete Rios are important departure points for regional and long-distance buses.
Lisbon Airport is also connected to the city’s metro network.
However, public transport can become less convenient when arriving late at night, travelling with several suitcases or continuing to smaller villages without frequent bus connections.
For a couple or family sharing the cost of a private transfer, the price difference may also be less significant than it initially appears.
A €120 private transfer shared between four passengers costs €30 per person.
The added convenience of travelling directly from the airport to your front door may justify the additional expense.
An opportunity for local transport businesses?
The discussion surrounding airport taxi prices also highlights an opportunity for transport businesses based on the Silver Coast.
The region has attracted a substantial international community, including permanent residents, retirees, remote workers and people who divide their time between Portugal and their home countries.
Many travel regularly through Lisbon Airport.
At the same time, recommendations for reliable airport transfers remain a recurring subject in local Facebook groups.
This suggests a continuing demand for professional transport services offering transparent prices, dependable collection arrangements and good communication in English.
For smaller local businesses, trust and reliability may be just as important as competing on price.
A passenger who knows that their driver will arrive on time, monitor a delayed flight and provide a comfortable journey home is more likely to use the same service again.
That relationship can be especially valuable for frequent travellers.
Local recommendations remain useful, but they should be accompanied by clear information about pricing, licensing and the service provided.
A welcome improvement – but the Silver Coast needs transparency too
The new fixed-fare system at Lisbon Airport is a positive development in terms of price transparency.
From 15 October, passengers travelling into Lisbon should have a clearer understanding of what their taxi journey will cost.
For Silver Coast residents, however, the situation remains more complicated.
The new €16 and €19 city fares do not extend to Caldas da Rainha, Nazaré, São Martinho do Porto or Peniche.
Nevertheless, the existing official taxi voucher system already offers published prices for several of these destinations.
These fares provide a useful benchmark when comparing privately arranged transfers.
For expatriates who travel regularly between the Silver Coast and Lisbon Airport, the most practical approach remains to compare prices, confirm exactly what is included and use properly licensed transport providers.
Whether you are returning home to São Martinho do Porto after visiting family abroad, welcoming friends to Nazaré or arranging an early departure from Caldas da Rainha, knowing the full transport cost in advance makes travelling considerably easier.
And that is something both passengers and professional taxi drivers should be able to appreciate.
